Definition
- The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for Water Supply and Sanitation is the official United Nations mechanism tasked with monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) relating to drinking-water and sanitation (MDG 7, Target 7c), which is to: "Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation". Access to drinking-water and to basic sanitation is measured by the MDG indicators: - Proportion of population using an improved drinking-water source; - Proportion of population using an improved sanitation facility. In fulfilling this mandate, the JMP publishes updated estimates every two years on the use of various types of drinking-water sources and sanitation facilities at the national, regional and global levels. The JMP is also collaborating with international organizations and with individual countries to further develop national and global monitoring. In preparation for the post-2015 period, JMP has initiated four working groups to identify potential targets and indicators for water, sanitation, hygiene and equity/non-discrimination. (en)
