Definition

  • The Max-Planck-Institut fur Chemie Geochemistry Division researches the chemical and temporal evolution of the Earth's interior (mantle, crust and core). We study diverse geological processes, by measuring isotopic abundances in natural radioactive decay systems (e.g., uranium-lead, rubidium- strontium, samarium-neodymium, rhenium-osmium) as well as by measuring trace element concentrations in rocks and minerals, using mass spectrometry. We model calculations of global circulation of the Earth's interior in connection with both the differentiation of the crust and mantle and internal recycling of differentiated material. Regional studies are carried out together with field geological and petrographic investigations. Website: "http://diotima.mpch-mainz.mpg.de/~geo/" (en)
