  • [Text adapted from the CIMSS Home Page] The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was established in 1980 to formalize and support cooperative research between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Space Science and Engineering Center. Sponsorship and membership of the Institute was expanded to include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1989. CIMSS maintains programs relating to Operational Weather Satellites, New Instrument Development, Research Applications, Education/Outreach, and Field Experiments. There is also access to real time GOES and POES weather satellite imagery.
