Definition

  • The National Museum of Natural Sciences is a pioneering center in our country in the research and popularization of our national heritage. The main objectives of the Research Division are to describe the many forms of biological and geological diversity on our planet, and in the Iberian-Balearic region in particular; to study the various processes that generate, shape and maintain this biodiversity; and to promote its conservation. Within the MNCN, the Department of of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology has the greatest number of researchers. Research investigation centers mainly on Systematics and Biodiversity, in a broad sense, and embraces faunistic diversity, taxonomy, biological cycles, biogeography, phylogeny, speciation patterns and geographic patterns of diversity. Many diverse animal groups are studied: among vertebrates, mainly fish and amphibians; among invertebrates, turbellarians, earthworms, nematodes, insects (coleopterans, mallophaga, hymenopterans, odonatans), crustaceans from caves and frantic waters, aquatic mites and mollusks.
