Definition

  • The Arctic and Antarctic Research Center (AARC) maintains an archive of more than 175,000 satellite passes of the Earth's polar regions. At present, this database is over 16 Terabytes in size. The AARC also provides data processing services to a wide variety of polar researchers. The AARC supplies data to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in collaboration with the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs. Our data is continuously tracked and recorded by antennas at McMurdo Station and Palmer Station in Antarctica and by the U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers Polar Sea and Polar Star, while operating at high latitudes. This year, the USCGC Healy finished testing and has begun tracking and recording satellite data. The AARC uses the SeaSpace (Inc.) TeraScan software and computer hardware from Sun Microsystems. The satellite tracking systems at Palmer and McMurdo Stations are TeraScan systems. TeraScan is also used by the Japanese, German, and Italian Antarctic programs.
