MST

Definition

  • The mission of the NERC MST Radar Facility at Aberystwyth is to provide high-quality atmospheric data products to the UK academic community in support of environmental research and education. The data are freely available through the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC). The MST (Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere) Radar at Capel Dewi (near Aberystwyth in West Wales, UK) is a 46.5 MHz pulsed Doppler radar ideally suited for studies of atmospheric winds, waves and turbulence. It is run almost exclusively in the ST-mode for which MST radars are unique in their ability to give continuous measurements of the three-dimensiuonal wind vector over the altitude range 2 - 20 km at resolutions of a few hundred metres in altitude (typically 300 m) and a few minutes in time (typically 2-3 mins). Additionally, under certain circumstances, the radar returns can give information about the atmospheric static stability (thus allowing for monitoring of the altitude and sharpness of the tropopause), humidity fields and turbulence (of at least moderate intensity). Technical Information: 1. Operating frequency/radar wavelength 46.5 MHz/6.45 m 2. Peak transmitted power 160 kW (from 5 Tycho Technology WPT-50 transmitters) 3.
