Definition

  • The mission of the National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) is to develop and disseminate scientific information needed for understanding the ecology and values of our nation's wetlands. The National Wetlands Research Center had its beginnings in the National Coastal Ecosystems Team, founded in 1975 as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (USFWS's) Office of Biological Services. The Team was originally located in Stennis, Mississippi (near Bay St. Louis), on the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's rocket-testing site. The Teams mission was to bridge the gap between researchers and decision makers by gathering, synthesizing, and disseminating information. The National Wetlands Research Center is a source and clearinghouse of science information about wetlands in the United States and the world for fellow agencies, private entities, academia, and the public at large. The NWRC is involved with partners from universities, state and local agencies, and the private sector. Website: http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/ [Summary provided by the USGS.] (en)
