  • The Baltic Sea Research Institute Warnem?nde (IOW for Institute for Ostseeforschung Warnemunde) was founded in 1992 in accordance with a recommendation of the German Scientific Council. It succeeded the Institute for Marine Research Warnem?nde, which as a member of the Academy of Science was for decades the most important institution for marine research in the GDR. The scientific programme of the new institute was dedicated to the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The IOW has four departments representing the disciplines of physical oceanography, marine chemistry, biological oceanography and marine geology. An instrumentation group is affiliated with the Department of Physical Oceanography. Jointly the departments work on a long-term research programme.
