ISOTOPES

Definition

  • The isotopic record found in various non-marine records reveal direct information about the past climate. d18O (delta oxygen-18), 16O and 18O are isotopes of oxygen with slight differences in atomic weight. Studies using other isotopes such as Carbon-13, Carbon-14 and Hydrogen are widely used. Isotopic analysis is especially important in dendroclimatologic and speleothem analyses. (en)
