- The Oceanographic Institute at the University of Sao Paulo (lO-USP) was founded in 1946, as Paulista Institute of Oceanography. In 1951 she moved to its current name when it was incorporated to USP. At the time of foundation, the objectives of its idealizadores pointed to the need for an institution to provide a scientific basis for fishing and, in a broader conception, the exploitation of all available resources along the coast Paulista.
