Definition

  • The Italian Museo Nazionale dell’Antartide was established in 1996 by the Minister of University and Research, as a consortium of three universities (Genova, Siena, Trieste) with the aim to give support to the scientific activities of the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme and favour the dissemination of the scientific results. Its tasks are to curate, study, and increase the value of all scientific material collected during the Italian Antarctic expeditions, as well as to promote public understanding of Antarctic science and the knowledge of scientific results achieved by the Italian Antarctic research community. The scientific material includes thousands of specimens of rocks, meteorites, terrestrial and marine organisms, thousands of meters of sediment and ice cores, and many environmental specimens. The material is appropriately stored, recorded in public databases and available to the national and international scientific communities. The Museum has a rich polar library including books, journals, geographic and thematic maps, movies and slides concerning polar regions and science. To promote the knowledge of the Antarctic continent, permanent exhibitions are held in the three sections of the Museum. (en)
