Definition
- The Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) Division organizes data on the nation's coastal and ocean resources and provides this information to decisionmakers in the form of environmental reports and papers, regional and national atlases, and desktop and geographic information system products. Through its five branches and support staff, the Division also supports other government agencies, such as NOAA's Sanctuaries and Reserves Program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as other organizations concerned with protecting the United States' coastal and ocean environments of U.S. SEA conducts a comprehensive national assessment program focusing on the characterization of coastal and ocean resources. One of the Division's main objectives is to gather useful environmental information and organize it in a way that is clear, comprehensive, and user-friendly. Databases are maintained on the characteristics of coastal and estuarine areas, distributions of biological resources and habitats, economic activities, and pollutant discharges from point and nonpoint within these areas. The Division develops and uses desktop information systems from this information and provides and supports such systems to other government agencies and institutions. SEA also develops digital geographic data and produces thematic maps with its state-of-the-art GeoCOAST geographic information systems facility.
