Definition
- The German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) of the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) has developed and operates the Intelligent Satellite Data Information System ISIS, representing the interface between DLR-DFD's data inventories/archives and its users. The system provides comfortable menu-driven tools for easy access to catalogue information, inventory information, browse information, and general textual information. ISIS offers the following services: - search and retrieval of digital images and data sets for presently 9 different sensors (NOAA/AVHRR, Landsat TM, ERS-1/SAR, ERS-2/SAR, X-SAR-1, X-SAR-2, MOMS-02-D2, Nimbus/TOMS, and Meteor/TOMS) with a variety and large number of standard and higher level product types, - query support functions by means of a map browser and geographical names databases, - transfer of digital quicklooks for visual inspection, and transfer of selected data (full data set or interactively defined subsets), - online order placement, - entry point for the International Directory Network IDN (`cooperating node' installation at DFD), providing access to worldwide available data sets for various scientific disciplines and to a large number of international catalog systems, - an `infoboard' with supplementary textual information (guide level) and software tools, - support of information retrieval by a thesaurus-navigator and - online ability for users to send comments. The system is built as a client/server configuration (presently for PCs or SUN workstations) and can be accessed by a simple ASCII-Interface (released in January `93) or a Graphical Interface (GISIS, released during fall of 1994). Further upgrades are in preparation. Software needed for data transfer to the client is free of charge, can be copied and installed remotely by the user, and will be updated automatically in case of system upgrades. The relevant procedures can be obtained from the `infoboard' presented by the menu. The access addresses are as follows: Internet: 1. via telnet input: telnet 129.247.162.47 user: dlrpid password: - 2. via world wide web (www) open one of the URLs: "http://pid.da.op.dlr.de/" "http://www.dfd.dlr.de/" there you will find the chapter `information services (ISIS)', routing you to a set of cross-referenced HTML documents. Clicking on `Accessing ISIS'(telnet) routes you to the login procedure for ISIS.
