- Bird Studies Canada is recognized nation-wide as a leading and respected not-for-profit conservation organization dedicated to advancing the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, in Canada and elsewhere, through studies that engage the skills, enthusiasm and support of its members, volunteers, staff and the interested public. Bird Studies Canada conducts programs in the Long Point area through the Long Point Bird Observatory and the Long Point Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Fund. Bird Studies Canada has been running regional programs for many years, beginning with the Ontario Bird Feeder Survey, launched in 1976, which later became the continental Project FeederWatch program. Wherever possible, regional projects have a large, and very important, volunteer component. Current projects in Ontario include the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program and the Nocturnal Owl Survey. Programs in British Columbia include the British Columbia Coastal Waterbird Survey and the British Columbia Nocturnal Owl Survey. In the Atlantic Region, the Atlantic Canada Nocturnal Owl Survey begins this year. Bird Studies Canada also conducts research nationally through volunteer-based surveys such as the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey and Project FeederWatch.
