Definition

  • Ordnance Survey is the internationally recognized market leader in its field. We offer a wider range of products than any comparable organization, from traditional walking maps and road maps to the large-scale maps and digital products that now make up the largest part of our business. Map making begins with the 450 surveyors and Data Collection staff based at Ordnance Survey's nationwide network of field offices. Our surveyors use state-of-the-art global positioning equipment and hand-held pen computers to capture the latest changes in Britain's landscape. This information is supplemented by aerial photography, and by data from contractors and local authorities. Soon, we plan to use additional material from high-resolution satellite imagery. Data from the field offices is downloaded every evening to Ordnance Survey's Southampton headquarters, where the surveyor's work is developed into maps and digital products.
