CEAREX

Definition

  • The Coordinated Eastern Arctic Experiment (CEAREX) was conducted to study the processes regulating eastern Arctic Ocean exchange of momentum, heat, and biomass. The primary CEAREX objectives were to understand the structure and function of mesoscale and submesoscale process in the transport of heat northward, and to understand the ice behavior and associated acoustic ambient noise and coherence (CEAREX, 1990). CEAREX was a multi-national, multi-platform field program carried out in the Greenland and Norwegian Seas and north to Svalbard, from September 1988 through May 1989. Participating nations included Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, and the United States. The field program consisted of four phases: Polarbjorn Drift Phase, Whaler's Bay/SIZEX Phase, Oceanography Camp Phase, and Acoustic Camp Phase. CEAREX collected data on meteorological conditions, bathymetry, hydrography, acoustic and ambient noise, sea ice dynamics (acceleration, deformation, stress), positions from GPS satellite measurements, and biophysical data. Data were collected using ship platforms, ARGOS buoys, helicopter and aircraft, meteorology stations on the drifting ice, rawinsonde, CTD casts, and satellites. CEAREX was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Reference: Pritchard, R.S., et al. 1990.
