Definition

  • "http://geochange.er.usgs.gov/" The USGS Global Change Research Program (USGS GCRP), an operational branch of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), was established to document data and information on past and present global environmental change processes. The USGS GCRP Data Server was developed to provide researchers with access to the data sets and documentation archived at the USGS GCRP. This Data Server is located in Reston, VA, and provides on-line access via the Internet. Research conducted at the USGS GCRP include the following categories: - Biogeochemical Exchanges between Terrestrial Systems and the Atmosphere and Oceans - Arid and Semiarid Regions Research - Cold Regions Research - Interaction of Climate and Hydrologic Systems - Land Characterization and Land Data Management - Paleoclimate Research - Sensitivity of Water Resources These research projects fall into two categories: the study of past conditions (useful in the determination of natural climate variability) and the study of modern environmental processes. Data from these projects are also used to evaluate and improve upon general circulation models. Several data sets are available on-line through the USGS GCRP Data Server via anonymous FTP or the World Wide Web. Data sets are archived in the following general categories: - Modern Average Global Sea Surface Temperature - Monthly Average Polar Sea Ice Concentration ( in preparation for publication in the U.S. Geological Survey Digital Data Series as DDS-27) - PRISM: Pliocene Research, Interpretation, and Synoptic Mapping - Paleoclimate studies of the Arctic Ocean - Methane and gas hydrates in Arctic sediments and permafrost - Volcano Emissions Data set descriptions, including metadata descriptions in the FGDC Metadata Standard and the Directory Interchange Format, are provided with most data sets. Core data, which consist of the essential observations and information of each data set are provided and often derived data sets and additional programs to manipulate or view the data are provided as well. A collection of abstracts from current USGS global change research projects are also archived and are accessible via the World Wide Web. For more information or to obtain data sets via the World Wide Web: "http://geochange.er.usgs.gov/" or via FTP: >ftp geochange.er.usgs.gov For more information contact: Global Change Research Coordinator MS 104 National Center U.S. Geological Survey Reston, VA 22092 (703) 648-4450 (en)
