  • The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Council (CCLRC) is the UK's strategic agency for large-scale neutron, muon, synchrotron and high power laser facilities and advisor to the government and the other research councils on facility provision. The CCLRC provides large-scale facilities and expertise in support of research and is the UK gateway to international facilities and is also the UK Government shareholder in Diamond. CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is located in Oxfordshire, near Didcot, and is conveniently situated for air, rail and road networks. Its main facilities enable research into new materials and structures, for example from battery electrolytes to turbine blades, X-ray laser research, space-based astronomy, the co-ordination of particle physics and many other topics. RAL also has responsibility for CCLRC's third site, the Chilbolton Observatory near Andover in Hampshire, which specializes in radio propagation research related to mobile communications.
