Definition
- The Geological Survey, or the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) belongs to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. The Survey is located in Dodoma, central Tanzania. At present the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) is organized into four sections: Geology, Mines, Research and Laboratories located in Dodoma, and Mineral Trade located in Dar es Salaam. Within the changed socio-economic environment, the functions of the MRD will focus on: -Developing an enabling legal, regulatory, fiscal and institutional environment for private sector mining investment -Strengthening the ability of the State to effectively carry out its regulatory, promotional (investment and marketing) functions -Establishing environmental, health and safety guidelines and ensuring compliance -Carrying out basic geological mapping, maintaining up-to-date mineral resource database, and promoting development of the country's mineral potential -Reinforcing the provision of extension services and assistance to artisanal and small-scale miners in adopting safe and environmentally-sound mining and processing practices -Facilitating development of adequate industrial infrastructure for mining development.
