Museum staff and Research Associates conduct research both individually and in partnership with a variety of people including university scientists, government scientists, the private sector and skilled amateurs. Collections of specimens and information are the beginning of all Museum work and programs. The Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History botany collection (known as NSPM in scholarly publications) contains more than 60,000 specimens. These include a herbarium of 20,000 sheets of vascular plants. The Geological Collections represent the rocks, minerals and fossils which occur in Nova Scotia or are of interest to Nova Scotians. The Zoological Collection of the NSMNH consists of representation of all major faunal groups found within Nova Scotia, as well as exotic organisms (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Mollusca, Mammalia - among others).
