Definition
- The Satellite Meteorology and Climatology Division (SMCD) conducts research and develops new satellite products to improve and expand the use of satellite data for monitoring global meteorological, climatological and environmental conditions. The Division conducts an end-to-end program ranging from planning new satellite instruments to developing advanced satellite products and applications and transitioning these innovations to operations in NOAA's weather, climate, and environmental monitoring and prediction systems. The Division activities result in the following outcomes: * High quality calibrated observations and products from NOAA, Meteorological Operations Platform (METOP), and future National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) and Geostationary Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) observations. * Improved utilization of satellite observations and products from NOAA and non-NOAA satellites for weather and climate applications. * Leadership and development of new algorithms, applications, and processing systems for future satellite observing systems.
