Definition

  • The Ocean Research Institute has six research departments that study the physics, chemistry, earth science, and biology of the oceans. ORI scientists conduct research primarily during expeditions of the research vessels Tansei-maru and Hakuho-maru. As an educational institution of the graduate school of the University of Tokyo, the Ocean Research Institute focuses on nurturing young scientists. Each of the three graduate schools offers Master's and Ph.D. programs, which include a curriculum of lectures and seminars, as well as hands-on training. We also nurture students through supervision of research leading to theses and dissertations, commonly involving participation in seagoing expeditions.
