Definition
- Science and technology are essential for the prevention of disasters that result from torrential rains, snowstorms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and other natural phenomena. The National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) is contributing to the creation of a safe living environment through the development of efficient and dependable technology. NIED designs and conducts a wide range of research projects aimed to investigate the mechanism of how and when disasters occur. Prediction of natural disasters is made possible through observations and experiments. In response to domestic and international needs, NIED is also involved in researches that study future changes in the earth's environment and in research that aims to predict natural disasters caused by these changes.
