SCAMP

Definition

  • SCAMP is a cooperative mapping project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Division of Mines and Geology. The project provides a variety of geologic-information products for public access in southern California-including geologic and geophysical maps and reports that describe the geologic setting and geologic history of southern California. These maps and reports are providing a foundation for specialized investigations of geologic hazards and earth resources, and can be used for land-use planning decisions that involve earth-science data. The project has two objectives: * Develop a uniform geologic-map data base for southwestern California that will provide a geologic foundation for a broad range of societal applications--including evaluations of geologic hazards, natural resources, and environmental quality * Determine the geologic framework and geologic history of southwestern California, with emphasis on the evolution of the San Andreas fault system. These objectives are achieved mainly by making general-purpose geologic maps in digital form. Studies of isotope geology and geochronology, regional geophysics and geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, and pedology provide essential information that is incorporated into the map data base. For the entire project area, the geologic-map data base will be at 1:100,000 scale; where warranted by geologic and societal issues, additional maps will be produced at 1:24,000 and 1:48,000 scale. The maps produced may include both surface-geology maps and subsurface-geology maps generated from drill records and from geophysical data. The maps are digitally produced using the Geographic Information System (GIS) software ARC/INFO, and graphic files are available for downloading in several formats via anonymous ftp. Future plans include map release of digital geologic folios on CD-ROM. The primary folio layer will be a digital geologic map, mostly captured at 1:100,000 scale.
