VTIR

Definition

  • A visible and thermal infrared radiometer (VTIR) covers one visible band and three thermal infrared bands to detect thermal radiation from the earth's surface. This radiometer is equipped with a rotating scanning mirror which mechanically scans the earth's surface from right to left, at right angles to the direction of flight of the satellite. When the mirror deviates from the direction of the earth surface, it looks at an internal black body unit and at deep space, and thus obtains thermal infrared calibration data. The VTIR's resolution in terms of the earth surface is some 900 m in the visible-ray band and about 2,700 m in the thermal infrared bands. The scanning width of the VTIR is so wide (1,500km) that a particular area on the earth surface can be observed continuously for ten-odd days by using its side-lap. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VTIR -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wavelength/ micron Frequency 0.5-0.7 6.0-7.0 10.5-11.5 11.5-12.5 Resolution 900m 2.7km Sensitivity/ 55dB 0.5k SN Swath 1500Km Application Fields Band 1 Snow cover distribution (0.5-0.7) Ice distribution Cloud distribution Band 2 Water vapor distribution in upper layer (6-7) (Temperature zone) Detection of thin cirrus cloud Band 3 Snow cover distribution (10.5-11.5) Ice distribution Monitoring of sea water flow Sea surface temperature Band 4 Snow cover distribution (11.5-12.5) Ice distribution Monitoring of sea water flow Cloud distribution Sea surface temperature -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by: Tasuku Tanaka, Earth Observation Program Office Director, Program Planning and Management Department, National Space Development Agency of Japan Head Office, Hamamatsu-cho, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan Takeshi Osugi, Earth Observation Center Director, National Space Development Agency of Japan, Ohashi Hatoyama-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama pref, Japan Group: Instrument_Details Entry_ID: VTIR Group: Instrument_Identification Instrument_Category: Earth Remote Sensing Instruments Instrument_Class: Passive Remote Sensing Instrument_Type: Spectrometers/Radiometers Instrument_Subtype: Imaging Spectrometers/Radiometers Short_Name: VTIR Long_Name: Visible and Thermal Infrared Radiometer End_Group Group: Associated_Platforms Short_Name: MOS-1 Short_Name: MOS-1B End_Group End_Group (en)
