  • Legal Surveys fulfills legislated responsibilities relating to Canada Lands and to the survey of native land claims. Legal Surveys is also responsible for providing and maintaining the Canada Lands Survey System. This includes the standards and cadastral surveys required by a variety of property rights systems operated or supported by the federal government on Canada Lands. Legal Surveys Division is a part of Geomatics Canada which is apart of the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada. The staff of the Legal Surveys Division is made up of a wide range of skilled professional and technical people. Professional land surveyors, survey engineers, computer specialists, technicians, technologists and administrators ensure the efficient operations of the Division. The head of the division is the Surveyor General of Canada Lands. The Division's legislated responsibility is to regulate all legal surveys on Canada Lands. Canada Lands include the Yukon and Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Indian Reserves, National Parks, and the Offshore. Legal surveys create boundaries to define the extent of ownership interests in land. Plans of legal surveys are used in legal documents that transfer these interests. These plans of legal surveys of Canada Lands are recorded in the Canada Lands Surveys Records at Ottawa, some of which are also registered in land registration offices. The Division provides a consultation service, which includes the preparation of legal descriptions. It also manages legal survey and mapping projects for other government departments with land management responsibilities for specific Canada Lands.
