  • The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) at UC Santa Cruz provides facilities and administrative and technical support of faculty, researchers, and students interested in marine sciences. Faculty from several disciplines in the natural and social sciences are associated with IMS. Established in 1972, the institute now supports a variety of research activities in many areas. The Institute's on-campus complex includes the IMS office, faculty research laboratories; analytical labs for marine chemistry; biology, and geology; a computer laboratory; culture room for invertebrates and algae; portable seagoing analytic labs; and support facilities for the Año Nuevo Island program.
