Definition

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Alaska region has been actively collecting and analyzing spatially- referenced (GIS) data since the early 1980's. Over the years, many data themes have been collected and applied, using a continually evolving suite of software and hardware. Specially designed, in-house application software has been the heart of numerous and widely differing GIS solutions to often very complex analysis requirements. Most projects require specific biological data layers and one or more generalized base data layers. Currently, formal GIS data documentation (metadata) is developed under the guidelines of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGBC) utilizing the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
