Definition

  • The Centre for Topographic Information was created in 1988 as part of Geomatics Canada within Natural Resources Canada's Earth Sciences Sector. It provides the digital representation of the Canadian landmass and, in specific terms, it establishes, updates, and distributes data from the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB). It also distributes other related products for fees such as the Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED), Vector Map Level 0 (VMap0) data, the Arc Digitized Raster Graphics (ADRG) product, the Administrative Boundaries and the Updated Road Network (URN). Also, Toporama and the CGDI Data Alignment Layer are two products that CTIS distributes for free. CTIS as played a key role in the technological changes that have transformed the Canadian topographic information community. Nearly a hundred CTIS specialists have contributed significantly to the conversion of maps into digital topographic data leading a revolution in mapping that has opened new horizons in many fields of business. In a constant effort to provide excellence in digital topographic data, the CTIS recently reengineered its activities and is now better equipped to continually improve and enrich topographic and toponymic data on Canada.
