- The Independent Administrative Institution (IAI), until recently the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), deals with many facets of radiation research with the close collaboration of scientists in various fields of expertise. Subjects of research and development (R&D) in NIRS include biological effects of radiation and their mechanisms, medical and social countermeasures against radiation injuries, and disease diagnosis and treatment using radiation and radioisotopes Since its foundation in 1957 as a national research institute under the direct auspices of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan, NIRS has accomplished remarkable results in research, contributing to the progress of various aspects of radiological sciences. As part of administrative reform, the Science and Technology Agency merged with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports to form the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as of January 6, 2001. Under the direct control of this new ministry MEXT, NIRS was reborn as of April 1, 2001, as Independent Administrative Institution (IAI). The promotion of efficiency, transparency, and competition has a bigger role than before. We are aiming at building on our role as a unique research institute to become a center of excellence for investigating the relationship between humans and radiation from a wide range of viewpoints. Education and training in the radiological sciences are important mis sions. We hope to contribute to the maintenance of health and the promotion of the welfare of human society while securing the safety of use of radiation and radioisotopes.
