Definition

  • [Adapted from Animas River Abandoned Mine Lands Project introduction, "http://amli.usgs.gov/amli/data/animas/", and the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative home page, "http://amli.usgs.gov/amli/"] The Animas River Watershed Abandoned Mine Lands Project (ARWAMLP) is being conducted as part of the larger U.S. Geological Survey Project, the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative (AMLI). The purpose of AMLI is to provide technical assistance in support of Federal Land Management Agency (FLMA) actions to remediate contamination associated with abandoned hard rock mining activities. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to coordinate activities for the cleanup of federal lands affected by abandoned mine lands. The Animas River portion of the project focuses on the upper Animas River watershed in southwestern Colorado. (en)
