Definition

  • The research of the Botany section seeks to discover and describe the diversity of plant life in marine and terrestrial environments, to interpret the evolutionary origin of this diversity, and to explain the processes responsible for this diversity. A multitude of publications are produced by the Botany staff, including bi-monthly newsletters, floral checklists and taxonomic and nomenclatural references. Many curators compile bibliographies of references in their areas of specialty. The Department of Botany has produced many useful references for the botanical community, including taxonomic tools and regional checklists. Many of these are now available in electronic format. The Department hosts events and activities throughout the year to explore and recognize achievements in the botanical community. Several projects are underway to provide access to the image resources available in the department's collections of photographs and botanical illustrations.
