Definition
- The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) is a Core Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP). The goal of JGOFS is to improve knowledge of the processes controlling carbon fluxes between the atmosphere, surface ocean, ocean interior and its continental margins, and to monitor the sensitivity of these fluxes with respect to climate changes. The study covers regional to global spatial scales and seasonal to interannual time scales. JGOFS is divided into several task teams including: global survey, process study, deep ocean flux, continental margins, photosynthesis measurements, remote sensing, time series, synthesis and modelling, and data management. A global carbon dioxide (CO2) air-sea flux survey is being carried out in close collaboration with the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). Process studies are regional and occur in the North Atlantic, Equatorial Pacific, North Pacific, the Arabian Sea, and the Southern Ocean. Time series studies include the Bermuda-Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS); the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOTS); European Station for Time-Series in the Ocean, Canary Islands (ESTOC); Ocean Station Papa (PAPA); and Kyodo North Pacific Ocean Time Series (KNOT).
