- One of the keystones of WOCE was the World Hydrographic Program (WHP), which used a single ship per year over a period of 12 years to survey 48 long hydrographic sections, with some repeats. Only six stations each day could be occupied, giving a very low rate of data acquisition compared to what the meteorologists were getting from their upper air network.
