Definition

  • The Australian Oceanographic Data Centre (AODC) is a national data centre with the responsibility of acquisition and dissemination of oceanographic data within the Department of Defense and with the national and international marine science community. AODC operates within the International Oceanographic Commission's (IOC's) various data exchange programs including the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) program coordinating data exchange in 'delayed-mode', the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) coordinating data exchange in 'real-time' as well as the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) which is developing new methodologies and technologies for the management and exchange of temperature and salinity data. Nationally, the AODC is working in conjunction with the CSIRO Division of Oceanography to standardize quality control procedures for the WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal Data Assembly Centres. AODC manages bathythermograph, oceanographic station data, secchi disc, bottom type and bioluminescence observations. Small amounts of current meter data as well as geophysical and bathymetric parameters are now also managed by the centre. All data to be used for scientific research or 'public good' purposes are generally freely available on request. Digital data sets may be selected by geographic area, time period, cruise, shipname, country of origin, maximum/minimum depth or any combination of these criteria. A range of standard products such as scatter plots, profile plots, data inventories, summaries and analyses are also available on request. Data can be supplied via ftp (file transfer protocol), exabyte or QIC tape, or on floppy disc. The Tides and Survey section within the RAN Hydrographic Office still archives oceanographic data which includes tidal heights and bathymetric observations. Contact Information: Mr. B.
