Definition

  • The main responsibility of the Analysis and Modeling Division (AMD) is the development of the Canada's long-term energy and energy-related emissions projections. These projections are published under the title Canada's Energy Outlook and, more recently as Canada's Emissions Outlook: An Update. The Outlook provides a reference scenario for energy and emissions-related analysis and policy formulation both within Natural Resources Canada and for the recently completed National Climate Change Process (NCCP). In addition, the outlook is the official projection provided to the International Energy Agency and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as part of Canada's international reporting requirements. AMD's modeling framework is also used in the quantitative assessment of energy and environmental policy options and proposed measures. Recently, AMD has taken a lead role in the Analysis and Modeling Group (AMG), a federal-provincial body established under the National Climate Change Process (NCCP). The AMG released its report on the first phase of the analysis, An Assessment of the Economic and Environmental Implication for Canada of the Kyoto Protocol, in November 2000. Finally, AMD is currently engaged in a major project to develop a new integrated energy-technology-economy modeling structure for Canada. The new modeling structure will significantly enhance NRCan's capacities to undertake policy analysis.
