Definition

  • The University of Kassel Center for Environmental Systems Research was founded in 1995 as one of the University of Kassel's inter-faculty research centers. Professor Dr. Hartmut Bossel, pioneer of applying systems thinking to environmental research, was the founding Executive Director. In March, 1996, Professor Dr. Joseph Alcamo was awarded the Chair of Environmental Systems Engineering and succeeded Professor Bossel as Executive Director who shortly afterwards went into an active retirement. Since its beginning the Center for Environmental Systems Research has pursued the challenging goals of: -increasing understanding about the functioning of environmental systems and the causes of environmental problems, and -identifying "sustainable" pathways into the future, i.e. pathways that allow development of society in harmony with nature.
