Definition
- The Office of Science and Technology advocates and ensures a sound scientific basis for NMFS' science programs and resource conservation and management decisions. It has oversight of NMFS' scientific research and technology development activities including biology, ecology, economic and social sciences, oceanography, collection and management of scientific information, engineering, and other disciplines used to fulfill NMFS' conservation and management mission for living marine resources. The Office maintains the integrity of the NMFS' scientific enterprise and strives to maintain and improve the quality and credibility of NMFS' science. It is the primary interface between NMFS' scientific activity and NOAA, other agencies, and international organizations. The Office serves as the focal point within NMFS for the development and evaluation of domestic and international science and technology strategies and policies, including international science agreements. The Office evaluates NMFS' performance of the agency's conservation and management mission from a scientific perspective. The Office is responsible for, among other things: -Ensuring the quality and credibility of NMFS' fisheries science and NMFS' scientific staff -Development and implementation of NMFS' Long-range Science Strategy; Coordinating NMFS' domestic science and research programs and activities -Director of the Office serves as the NMFS Senior Scientist -Providing scientific analysis and advice for operational, resource conservation and management decisions, as appropriate, from a science perspective -Operation of the National Fisheries Statistics program -Leadership and management for activities related to the NMFS' Science Board -Coordination of NMFS' mission needs and requirements for research vessels and aircraft -Monitoring and improving the agency's understanding of global fisheries to contribute to the development and sound management of U.S. fisheries -Advancing U.S. strategic goals for fisheries by the transfer of appropriate fisheries science and technology to other countries for the purpose of effectively managing and conserving global living marine resources; and, Management of NMFS' Scientific Publications Unit.
