Definition
- The Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences was established in 1969 through the joint efforts of the Belle W. Baruch Foundation and the University of South Carolina. A free-standing entity within the College of Science and Mathematics, we have headquarters and laboratory facilities on the University?s main campus in Columbia and have the field laboratory, Baruch Marine Field Laboratory, located on Hobcaw Barony, near Georgetown, SC. The Field Laboratory provides facilities for research and education on estuarine, freshwater, and near shore ocean systems. The Baruch Marine Field Laboratory rests on a 17,500 piece of property known as Hobcaw Barony. Hobcaw is an Indian word meaning "between the waters." The Baruch Institute is dedicated to fostering discovery, advancing existing knowledge, and providing a sound understanding of marine and coastal environments. Excellence in both basic and applied research of these complex and diverse ecosystems is the governing principle. The Baruch Institute welcomes the general public and has a variety of educational programs for all ages. These include informal seminars presented by Baruch scientists where citizens learn about current research activities, and short courses for families and children. The Institute?s Continuing Education Program and the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve offer these educational experiences.
