Definition
- The Institute of Meteoritics (IOM), founded in 1944, was one of the first institutions in the world devoted to the study of meteorites. It is a premier center for research on the origin and early history of our solar system and the evolution of the planets Research in the IOM takes advantage of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities housed within IOM and the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Our research emphasizes geochemical and microbeam studies of extraterrestrial materials. The IOM meteorite collection now totals more than 600 different meteorites, and is an extremely valuable asset for researchers worldwide. Many specimens are displayed in our Meteorite Museum.
