Definition

  • The Museum of Zoology, University of Costa Rica was founded in 1966 and consists of numerous scientific collections that comprise the majority of invertebrate taxa and vertebrates. Specimens deposited in the museum come from numerous research projects of faculty of the School of Biology, as well as donations made by researchers and institutions (domestic and international), or by people from the non-scientific. Collections belonging to the University of Costa Rica and are scientific heritage, culture and history of this institution and the Government of Costa Rica. Function of the museum is used by law of the republic, as the national repository of zoological collections, and promote and sustain scientific research. By taxonomic group, the specimens are preserved in dry (skeletons, shells, skins) or liquid (mostly in 70% alcohol). Among the most important collections are: ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology, mammalogy, and aquatic invertebrates (corals, molluscs, crustaceans, insects) and terrestrial (arachnids) and are exclusively for scientific use. The Zoological Museum has close links with institutions in different countries and is visited constantly leading scientists working with collections, primarily with identification tasks, literature and material deposition.
