Definition
- Research in the areas of Space Plasma Physics, Space Planetology, Infrared Astronomy, Experimental Gravitation, Cosmic Rays. Research on Space Plasma Physics at IFSI is devoted to the investigation of particle populations and electromagnetic fields in regions from the inner terrestrial magnetosphere to the outer heliosphere. Main activities are the design and building of space instruments, the analysis and interpretation of the data, the development of numeric simulations and models to account for the observed phenomena. Laboratory simulations of processes in ionospheric plasma are also developed using a Plasma Chamber facility. Main past projects include: particle analysers for HEOS-1 and -2 (magnetosphere and solar wind), magnetometers for HELIOS-1 and -2 (interplanetary space from 1 to 0.3 AU), magnetometers for GEOS-1 and -2 (magnetosphere), ion analyser for ISEE-2 (magnetosphere and solar wind), ion analyser with mass separation for GIOTTO (comets) launched on 1985, active plasma experiment and magnetometer for TSS-1 (plasma processes in the ionosphere).
