  • Scleractinia is a subclass of class Anthozoa (Phylum Cnidarian) of water-based organisms formed by colonial polyps with hexamerous symmetry, eight and ten part symmetry is not uncommon. Stony corals, known as hard corals or 'reef-building corals, are sessile marine organisms that secrete a calicum carbonate skeleton to protect it's soft body. Polyps are individual animals with a cylindrical body crowned by an oral disc and mouth surrounded by tentacles. (en)
