  • The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) contributes to the development of the Canadian civil space industry by procuring business opportunities to local companies, namely contracts from foreign space agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and the American NASA. Through the implementation of the Canadian Space Program, the CSA ensures that Canada maintains its prominent position in the space arena. The CSA coordinates major Canadian Space Program activities including RADARSAT, an Earth observation satellite; the Canadian Astronaut Office; the David Florida Laboratory, Canada's world-class facility for assembly, integration, and testing of spacecrafts and other space hardwares; the Space Science and the Space Technologies Sectors; and the Canadian contributions to the International Space Station. The changes taking place in our society are bringing space technologies and their benefits closer and closer to more Canadians everyday. The CSA's Space Technology Sector is ensuring that this trend continues. Overall, the ST Sector has the mandate to promote the development of new and future space technologies that meet our national needs and to support our internationally competitive space industry for the benefit of Canadians. The Spacecraft Payloads Division emphasizes advancements in electronic and optical technologies critical to all spacecraft including satellites. The division's areas of expertise include remote sensing technologies used on Canada's RADARSAT Earth observation satellite system, digital electronics, optical sensing technologies essential to vision systems, and medical imaging.
