Air-based Platforms
Definition
- Platforms or a structure that are in the air-space and include a kite, helicopter or aircraft. Fixed wing aircraft are the platform of choice for most applications as they provide a stable platform for small-area, high resolution surveys. Airborne platforms can also serve to test spaceborne sensors before they are placed into orbit. These air-based platforms have downward or sideward looking sensors that are mounted on an aircraft to obtain images of the earth's surface. An advantage of airborne remote sensing, compared to satellite remote sensing, is the capability of offering very high spatial resolution images. (en)
