belongs to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. The Survey is
located in Dodoma, central Tanzania.

At present the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) is organized
into four sections: Geology, Mines, Research and Laboratories
located in Dodoma, and Mineral Trade located in Dar es Salaam.

Within the changed socio-economic environment, the functions of
the MRD will focus on:

its regulatory, promotional (investment and marketing) functions

-Establishing environmental, health and safety guidelines and
ensuring compliance

-Carrying out basic geological mapping, maintaining up-to-date
mineral resource database, and promoting development of the
country's mineral potential

-Reinforcing the provision of extension services and assistance
to artisanal and small-scale miners in adopting safe and
environmentally-sound mining and processing practices

-Facilitating development of adequate industrial infrastructure
for mining development.

The private sector will play the role of being the principal
vehicle for carrying out direct investment in mining.
