The City of Ottawa is responsible for providing key municipal services
to more than 791,100 residents. These services are essential ones that
residents rely on every day. They include drinking water, sewage
treatment, public health, social services, homes for the aged,
recreation and parks, arts and culture,garbage, blue box and leaf and
yard collection, municipal planning a d development, road development
and maintanence, public transit and emergency services such as police
and fire services. The Information Technology Branch includes the
Geographic Information Systems Section and the Surveys and Mapping
Section.

The staff in the Geographic Information Systems Section is dedicated
to the promotion and facilitation of geographic information systems
throughout the region. They utilise VISION* GIS software and ORACLE
database systems and other related GIS tools and utilities. Staff
collaborate with other departments in the development of GIS
applications which assist with the day to day business of the
region. Staff are currently working with the Municipal Application
Partnership, developing specialised GIS applications. They also
provide assistance in the undertaking of special projects and research
involving gathering and analysis of GIS data. Other services include
cartographic map and graphics production, data conversion, management
and distribution, and GIS system support. The GIS staff is responsible
for the development and implementation of standards, guidelines and
policy for spatial data for the corporation. Typical projects underway
within the section include: information data analysis and mapping in
support of the municipal business processes; topographic map
dissemination; road, water; sewer maps/data QC; thematic mapping; land
use mapping; emergency services mapping; aquiring, converting,
inputting, maintaining; quality assurance for corporate and shared
digital geographic data.


The Surveys and Mapping Section staff provide land information
services to the corporation, and participates in the collecting and
cataloguing of all types of geographic and legal property
information. They provide legal surveys for City land acquisition and
disposal. Activities include legal survey plan preparation, title
searching, field data acquisition, electronic drafting and plan
preparation. Surveys and Mapping staff assess the POLARIS property
database which includes parcels and Property Identification Numbers
for every property in the region. Field surveys involve high precision
control surveys, legal surveys, topographic surveys, engineering
surveys, location and layout surveys. Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
are used to carryout special projects by field staff for improved
accuracy and reduced cost. Staff offer aerial mapping and
photogrammetric services for photographic mosaics and electronic
topographic or engineering mapping. They also offers geomatic services
in GIS analysis, geographic data testing, data conversion, co-ordinate
