The objective of the Water Resources Management Division is to
administer various Acts as they relate to the allocation of water,
stream alterations, protection of water supply areas, licensing of
well drillers and other aspects of water resource management. The
Water Resources Management Division is comprised of six sections:

Surface Water

*administers the Federal-Provincial agreements on hydrometric and
climate networks and on water quality monitoring of rivers;
*plans and operates the provincial hydrometric network;
*implements the water supply area protection program;
*conducts water resource assessment and hydrologic impact studies;
*plans and carries out recurrent surveys on specific rivers;
*maintains a water quality database;
*monitoring and dissemination of drinking water quality data;
*monitoring and dissemination of THM data;
*plans and implements site specific water quality impact studies; and,
*produces interpretive reports on baseline water quality, variability
and trends.

Community Water & Wastewater

*reviews applications for environmental approval for new community
water and sewage systems, extensions and alterations;
*assists in the assessment of community water and sewage needs;
*investigates community water and sewage complaints;
*maintains the inventory of current boil water advisories issued by
the Department of Government Services and Lands;
*develops policies, regulations, and guidelines for the design,
construction and operation of waterworks and sewage works;
*carries out water pollution monitoring programs;
*maintains an inventory of water and sewer systems; and;
*administers a voluntary operator certification program.

Groundwater

*administers the Well Drilling Act and regulations under the Act;
*issues well driller's licenses;
*conducts water well inspections;
*maintains a groundwater well observation network;
*plans and implements the wellhead protection program;
*develops policies and guidelines concerning groundwater resources;
*conducts groundwater investigations and studies; and,
*maintains databases of drilled water wells and groundwater quality.

Hydrologic Modelling

*develops, evaluates and implements computer-based techniques and
methodologies required for water resource management;
*performs comprehensive hydrologic analysis, adapts appropriate
hydrologic hydrodynamic models to watersheds, and develops technical
guidelines and policiesfor water resources management;
*implements hydrologic database management systems;
*incorporates Geographic Information System and remote sensing
technology into the Division's activities;
*operates and maintains a system to acquire near real-time streamflow
and climate data from remote river gauging stations via satellite;
and, *operates, maintains and upgrades the Flood Forecast Centre.

Water Investigations

*administers the process for reviewing and recommending environmental
approval of any proposed alterations to bodies of water;
*investigates water-related problems and complaints;
*develops regulations and guidelines for designing water-related
structures;
*carries out flood and water resource impact studies; and,
*addresses dam safety issues.

Water Rights

*Water allocation and grant of rights for all beneficial uses of all
waters;
*evaluates proposals for issuing water use authorizations;
*maintains computer aided Water Rights Registry;
*develops and implements technical guidelines and regulations for
optimum use and rational management of water resources;
*conducts water use studies; and,
*provides expertise in environmental assessment of projects and
technical studies.);
