The Geography Program provides the geographic and cartographic
infrastructure to support the National Statistical System. It is
mandated to produce timely and relevant research, concepts, products
and services for clients. Geography Division serves this program by
providing maps, electronic files and geographic reference products,
as well as by producing and releasing the basic population and
dwelling statistics for each Census. With the increasing popularity
of Geographic Information Systems in government and the private
sector, more research and technical support is being directed to
other divisions to support survey frame development, integration and
thematic mapping.

The Geography Division's primary activities are:

1. The development of spatial concepts such as enumeration areas
(EAs), Census Divisions (CDs), Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs), and
urban and rural definitions, for data collection, organisation and
dissemination. The Division monitors the evolution of various
administrative and legislative concepts, and ensures that Statistics
Canada's geographic units remain up-to-date and that the appropriate
relationships between different concepts are maintained.

2. Updating of a geographic database which represents a spatial base
for the Agencys census surveys and administrative data. This base is
used in collection, processing, analysing, integration, and releasing
data.

3. The production of maps to facilitate the use of standard spatial
areas in the National Statistics System.

4. Research Activities: Research is an important component of
Geography Division's activities."""@en ;
