skos:definition """VTT Information Technology is one of the six research institutes
of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Remote sensing research at VTT focuses on advanced
interpretation methods and on their introduction to the user
community. Special areas of expertise are multisource data
applications for environmental monitoring and forestry. The
majority of research projects are co-operative efforts with
other Finnish institutions or foreign organizations.

Our special internationally recognized expertise includes
forestry applications, geometrical and radiometrical corrections
of images, and image mosaicing. We develop image interpretation
chains for the users. The image data are originated in airborne
or satellite instruments. We are able to analyze both optical
and radar images.

Participation in ESA and EC programs is of great
significance. International cooperation is mostly connected to
EU and ESA projects and to exchange of personnel. The
international aspect is important for the group, both because of
the unique opportunities in basic research, and also because of
the inherently international nature of remote sensing.

The development of methods and systems related to satellite
images represent the larger part of the project activities than
the use of aerial digital imagery, but it is increasing in
importance, and even extending to areas outside traditional
remote sensing. The strong emphasis on radar remote sensing in
the ESA through the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT satellites is reflected
in the group's activities on modeling of the radar imaging
process in order to develop interpretation methods for such
imagery. The use of optical satellite images is quite mature for
many purposes and is used for yield forecasting and forest
mapping and monitoring. Many forest applications are quite
research-dominated and utilize new sensors with diverse
geometrical resolution and aerial coverage.
